Create a web
On the File menu, point to New, and then click Web.
In the Web Sites list, select the template or wizard you want to use to create the new web.
In the Specify the location of the new web box, type or select a name for the new web.
If you want to use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to secure transactions for your new web, select the Secure connection required (SSL) check box.

Notes

You can also create a new web by importing an existing web from your local computer, network, or the World Wide Web, or by converting a folder to a web.
The procedure for creating a subweb is the same for creating a web.

Import a web
You can import a source directory of files from your local computer or network. You can also import a web from a Web server on your computer, on a network server, or from the World Wide Web.

On the File menu, click Import.
If you don't have any webs open in FrontPage, the New Web dialog box is displayed, with Import Web Wizard selected in the Web Sites list. In the Specify the location of the new web box, type the name for the new web that will be created from the imported source directory or web, and then click OK.
If you're editing a web in FrontPage, the Import dialog box is displayed. Click the From Web button.
The first screen of the Import Web Wizard is displayed.

Choose the web you want to import:
To import a source directory of files from your local computer or network, click From a source directory of files on a local computer or network, and then in the Location box, type the path to the directory. Or, click Browse to locate the directory, and then click OK.
Tip If you want to import the entire directory, including any subfolders or subwebs, select the Include subfolders check box.

To import a web from a Web server, click From a World Wide Web site, and then in the Location box, type the complete URL of the starting page you want to import. The starting page can be any page in the web, not just the home page.
Tip If you want to import a web that uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for secure transactions, select the Secure connection required (SSL) check box.

Click Next.
The second screen of the Import Web Wizard is displayed. The screen differs depending on the option you selected in step 2 of this procedure.

Determine the files to be imported:
If you chose to import from a source directory of files on a local computer or network, the Files list shows the files that will be imported:
To import all of the files listed, click Next.
To exclude specific files from being imported, select them, click Exclude, and then click Next.
To refresh the file list with the latest information, click Refresh.
If you chose to import a web from a Web server, you can optionally specify limitations on the files to be imported:
To import pages that are a specific level of hyperlinks below the starting page, select the Limit to this page plus check box, and then in the Levels below box, type the number of levels you want to import.
For example, if you specify a level of 0, FrontPage imports only the starting page you chose in step 2 of this procedure and any images, controls, applets, or other files on that page. If you specify a level of 1, FrontPage imports the starting page and its contents, plus all files pointed to by hyperlinks on the starting page (and any images, controls, applets, and so on contained in those files).

To import no more than a specific amount of file space (for example, 500 kilobytes) on your hard drive, select the Limit to check box, and then in the KB box, type the amount.
To import only text and image files, excluding any controls, applets, or other related files contained on the page, select the Limit to text and image files check box.
The last screen of the Import Web Wizard is displayed.

Click Finish.
Notes

If you import a disk-based web into an existing disk-based web, FrontPage only adds the files and folders to the current disk-based web. It does not create a new disk-based subweb.
If you import a Microsoft Access database (.mdb extension), you will be prompted to create a database connection.

Create a folder
Create a folder in your web to organize your pages and files. For example, you might create a folder named Multimedia to store sound effects, videos, and so on. If you want to create a folder within an existing folder, select the existing folder before using this procedure.

Right-click in the Folder List, and then click New Folder on the shortcut menu.
Type the name of the new folder, and then press ENTER.

Rename a web
When you rename a web, Microsoft FrontPage automatically updates all internal hyperlinks and other web settings with the new web name.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Web Settings, and then click the General tab.
  2. In the Web name box, type a new name for the web.
    Notes
  • Renaming a disk-based web changes the path to the web on your local computer or local network. Renaming a server-based web changes the web's URL on the server.
  • If you rename a web after publishing it, you'll need to republish the entire web under the new name. Hyperlinks from other Web sites to your old web will no longer work, so be sure to advise your site visitors of the new path or URL. You can also redirect the old URL to the new URL by creating a virtual directory on the server; consult your server documentation for details.

Copy a web
The Publish command lets you copy a web or a subweb to either a file system location or a server. When you copy a web by publishing it, Microsoft FrontPage maintains all of the hyperlinks, as well as the original web's theme information, shared borders, and so on. If you publish a web to another web, FrontPage creates the original web as a subweb of the web to which it was published.

Open a web
  • On the File menu, click Open Web, and then do one of the following:
To open a disk-based web on your local computer, in the Folder Name box, type the path to the folder containing the web, and then click Open.
For example, to open a web named Northwind located on your C: drive in the My Webs folder, you would type C:\My Webs\Northwind.
  • Or, use the Look In box to navigate to the My Webs folder (or any other folder containing webs). In the list of webs, select the web you want, and then click Open.
  • To open a disk-based web on a network computer, use the Look in box to navigate to the network drive and folder containing the web you want to open. In the list of webs, select the web you want, and then click Open.
Tip To map a network drive without leaving the Open Web dialog box, click Tools, and then click Map Network Drive.
  • To open a web on a server, in the Folder Name box, type the URL to that web, and then click Open.
For example, to open a web named Northwind on a server named My Server, you would type http://My Server/Northwind.
  • To open a subweb displayed in the Folder List of another web, double-click the subweb.

    Notes

To open a web that you've opened recently, in the Open Web dialog box, click the drop-down arrow at the right of the Folder Name box, click the web you want, and then click Open. Or, if you aren't in the Open Web dialog box, point to Recent Webs on the File menu, and then click the web you want.
To open the last web you worked on automatically each time you start FrontPage, click Options on the Tools menu, and then select the Open last web automatically when FrontPage starts check box.
In the Open Web dialog box, click an icon on the left (such as History, Favorites, or Web Folders) to open a web in one of those locations.
If you already have a web open, each subsequent web opens in a new FrontPage window.

Import graphics to a web
Import pictures and videos to a web so that you can quickly access the files you need. For instance, you can add pictures to your web, one by one, by adding each picture to a page and then saving the page. However, if you know that you will be using a certain group of pictures, you can import them all at once into a folder you specify in your web. Then, when you want to add a picture to a page, you can access it quickly without having to look for it in the file system.

In Windows Explorer, select the graphics you want to import.
Tip You can select a list of files by clicking the first file, and then while pressing SHIFT, click the last file in the list. Or, to select individual files, press and hold CTRL, then click the files.

  1. Right-click the selected files, and then click Copy on the shortcut menu.
  2. Switch to Microsoft FrontPage.
  3. In Folders view, open the folder into which you want to import the graphics.

Right-click in the Contents pane, and then click Paste on the shortcut menu.
Tip You can also import graphics by clicking and dragging the files (for example, from your desktop) into the Folder List or Contents pane in FrontPage
.

Create a new page in the Folder List

  1. Creating a new page in the Folder List is an easy way to add new pages to your web.
  2. In the Folder List, right-click the folder in which you want to create the new page, and then click New Page on the shortcut menu.
Type the name of the new page, and then press ENTER.
    Notes
  3. If you right-click the background of the Folder List without selecting a folder, the new page will be created in your root web.

If your web specifies that all pages use themes, shared borders, or navigation bars, the new page will inherit those settings from the web when you edit the page in Page view.

Front Page Problems
The most common problem with Front Page is that users do not have Client for Microsoft Networks installed. To see if you have it installed, right click on Network Neighborhood (on your desktop) and choose properties. It should be listed on the Configuration tab under The following network components are installed:. If it is not listed, follow the instructions below.

If this does not solve your problem, please fill out a support request here.

  • How do I install Client for Microsoft Windows?
    1. First, have your Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD ready, because you may need it in the installation process.
    2. Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel
    3. In the Control Panel, double click Network
    4. Click Add, then double click Client.
    5. Double click Microsoft, and then choose Client for Microsoft Windows.
    6. Click OK to finish. It may ask for the Windows 95 or 98 CD at this time. The computer will then ask to be restarted. Restart it, and you are finished.
  • Another NTLM fix (From Microsoft Support).
    1. Under Network Properties, change the Primary Logon from MS Family Logon to Client for Microsoft Windows.
    2. Scan your C: drive for a *.pwl file and delete the file. Reboot.
    3. During the reboot, do not log on to the network.
